What's a CSA?
A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm is a great way to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. You purchase a share for an upfront cost and share in the bounty and risks of our farm. It's a great way to eat healthy, while having the convenience of a pre-selected choice of our best produce!
In exchange, our CSA members will receive a weekly box of fresh-picked produce (picked the same morning or the afternoon before) as it becomes available throughout the growing season. Produce in your box will depend on what is available at the time. We do not take requests on what to include or not include in your box, but we would love to hear from you in what you would like to see us include (or not) in future years
When joining a CSA, you MUST understand that the membership has a shared risk. If the farm gets bad weather, we may lose some crops. However, when we are blessed with an excess of produce, as often happens, you will share in our blessings!
Our CSA Shares
What Can You Expect in Your Share?
Because farming is unpredictable and we do not always know when our crops will be ready to harvest or how long harvest will go (or if there is a crop problem), share contents may vary from day to day but the value will be approximately the same even if the contents differ. We appreciate your understanding if you occasionally get something different from other members during the week.
Anticipated produce in the boxes include:*
- Lettuce – baby leaf, romaine, etc. (mid-May to July)
- Asparagus (mid-May to mid-June)
- Spinach (mid-May to July)
- Strawberries (mid June to late July)
- Zucchini and summer squash (late June thru early September)
- Cucumbers (early July thru September)
- Tomatoes (early July thru September)
- Cole crops – cabbage, broccoli (July thru September)
- Beets (July to early September)
- Peas, shell (July and August)
- Kale (July, August, and September)
- Swiss Chard (July and August)
- Green beans (July and August)
- Carrots (late July thru early September)
- Sweet corn (late July thru mid-September)
- Peppers, sweet and hot (August and September)
- Melons, red and yellow watermelon, muskmelon (August and September)
- Onions (mid-August thru mid-September)
- Potatoes (August and September)
- Pumpkins (mid September thru October)
- Winter squash (mid September thru October
- Fall décor, gourds and decorative corn (mid-September thru October)
- Pumpkin Party Passes (good only on select dates in September and October)
- Other miscellaneous produce
*All produce is weather dependent.
We will occasionally offer discounts on some of our Market products. These are BONUS discounts to our members only, regardless of where your pick up location is and are not figured into the cost of your share. These discounts will be available for a limited time only at our Market during the specified week (one time discount on these items). This is a way for you to get to know some of the other items we offer, and previous members have enjoyed this bonus tremendously.
Share Sizes and Cost:
Carter’s Red Wagon Farm is pleased to announce we are increasing the number of CSA shares in 2017.
Full (Family) Share
$625, serves 4-6
Approximately a bushel of fresh produce per week.
$300, Serves 1-2
Approximately one peck of produce per week.
Limited shares available.
Half (Regular) Share
$425, Serves 2-3
Approximately half a bushel of fresh produce per week.
Shares require a minimum of half the payment due on sign up and the second half due no later than June 30 (payable by check, cash, or credit card). There will be a $10 discount if paying in full up front, there will be an additional $10 discount if paying by cash or check. If your check is returned, you will be notified by phone and/or email. You will not be able to pick up your share until payment has been secured, and credit will not be given for missed weeks.
While we figure approximately a bushel of produce weekly per full share, there will be some weeks that may be less than a bushel (at the beginning of the season) while other weeks during the height of the season will most likely have more than a bushel.
During strawberry season, we anticipate being able to offer you the chance to participate in u-pick berries at the farm. This is usually a BONUS above and beyond the ready-picked berries in your share. It may be offered for free or at a very substantial discount, depending on this year’s strawberry crop.
We plan on including pumpkin party passes for our Legends of the American Frontier-themed corn maze this fall (for select Saturdays only).
We do not, however, substitute produce. Something you don’t like in the box? Please feel free to share it with friends, family, or neighbors!
We hope for a 20 week season, weather depending, which may be shortened or lengthened by a week or two. We plan on starting Memorial Day week and going as long into October as we can. Last year the value of our full share was over $1,000, giving our CSA members a savings of more than $400 in produce.
Should we have excess (which is often the case, thank God), our members will share in that excess. When there is excess, you may get a text or email from us inviting you to come to our farm or market for free or deeply discounted additional produce – or there may be more than usual in your box.
Share Pickups and Locations:
We have increased our shares this year with a set amount of pick-ups per day, including deliveries to Bemidji (Wednesdays and Fridays), Detroit Lakes (Tuesdays), Perham (Tuesdays), and Walker (Wednesdays). We are also looking at a possible pick up in Menahga on Thursdays, but that has not been finalized yet. Our pick up dates at our Market in Park Rapids will be Tuesday through Saturday.
We currently plan on having pick-ups at our Farm Market on East 34 during regular business hours of 10:00 – 5:30 (10:00 – 2:00 on July 4). Our employees work hard and multi-task all day long; please be on time for pick-ups. Boxes MUST be picked up during designated times; if your box is not picked up by the latest time shown, it will be forfeited and donated to the local Food Shelf or a family in need.

Because these businesses are generously giving of their time as a convenience to our customers, we ask that you please respect their business hours and employees when picking up your box. Boxes MUST be picked up during designated times; if your box is not picked up by the latest time shown, it will be forfeited.
We send out a newsletter on Sundays (sometimes Mondays) with information about what’s happening on the farm, photos of crops, crop reports, what to expect in your box, recipe ideas, etc. There is a lot of valuable information on what is going on in your newsletter, and we hope you will take the time to read through it each week. Look for the newsletter to start in early to mid-May. Please check your filtered emails and mark us as a “safe” sender.
We do our best to send a text reminder to you the night before or morning of your pick up. PLEASE include your cell phone number on your application. When we have excess produce or last minute bargains due to unanticipated excess at our Market, you will be notified by text or on Facebook ONLY.
We also have a members-only Facebook page and will be sharing the link in our first few newsletters. This Facebook page will include information on excess produce, specials, recipes, and more. We love to hear from you, so please feel free to comment and post on it!
If you are unable to get your share one week, feel free to give that share to a friend (let us know in advance who would be picking it up), or you can have it donated to the Food Shelf or another family in need. Credit is not given if you are unable to pick up your shares and because of the increased amount of shares this year, we are unable to hold shares for an additional day.

Our program is on a first come first served basis as we have a limited amount of shares at each pick-up location. Register early to ensure a share at your favorite location!
